LATELIERstarted as a storytelling brand, creating one of a kind pieces with artisans from Latin America to help preserve and protect their ancient traditions and craftsmanship, while offering a platform to tell their stories. This collection, Dule y Mola ("person and cloth” in Kuna) is a collaboration with the Kuna tribe and leather artisans in Colombia. The women of this tribe use a reverse appliqué stitching technique, layering various pieces of cloth to create geometric shapes and patterns to reflect their interpretations of their culture’s stories, called Molas. This technique has been passed down from generation to generation from mothers to daughters and serves as their primary source of oral history. Each jacket is designed with the mola in mind, making them one of a kind. Each cut, stitch, size and defect is a part of the jacket’s story, carried down from each stage of production. While the jacket may not be perfect, it perfectly embodies the beauty and diversity of its craftsmanship sharing its story with the wearer.
You can learn more about their story and the Kuna’s story on our community page.
Only two jackets available at a discounted price:
COLORADO SUEDE in Mist : SIZE SMALL
The Molas on this jacket is designed to represent the tools brought to the tribe by Europeans in the 1800s, reminding the Kuna that each lesson learned in life is a tool used to understand our greater purpose in this life. Please note this item has been discounted from $600 to $300 due to bunching in the collar.
COLORADO SUEDE in Black: SIZE SMALL
The Molas designed here are birds representing our souls. The Kuna believe that our souls take flight as birds and return each night to be with our bodies. This jacket is discounted from $600 to $300 due to a small rip near the Mola on the right side. We have added pink hand stitched embellishments to repair it.
